PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating material forming a dot pattern, effective for masking the substrate layer and suitable for the interior and exterior coating of a building, and provide a method of producing a coating film. SOLUTION: The objective coating material for forming a dot pattern contains particles dispersed in a vehicle and composed of (a) colored particles having a small diameter and (b) colored particle having a large diameter and colored in a color different from that of the particle (a). The average particle diameter D1 of the particle (a) is 0.5-10μm, the average particle diameter D2 of the particle (b) is 10-150μm and D24-D1 is >=10μm.
