PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a label printer and an apparatus for producing a label equipped with a label printer in which printing on the seam of a recording medium is avoided. SOLUTION: A recording medium 106 fed from a sheet feeding section to a recording section 303 is recorded continuously, while being carried through a carrying section, with labels by means of a recording head 601. Variation in the thickness of the recording medium 106 is detected by an inlet thickness detecting means 602 on the front side of the recording head 601 and by an outlet thickness detecting means 603 on the downstream side of the recording head 601. When the inlet thickness detecting means 602 detects a seam during carrying operation of the recording medium 106, a CPU controls the recording head 601 to bring it into protective state, e.g. caps the recording head 601, and controls the carrying section so as to carry the recording head 601 by a specified distance in the printing direction.
