PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optically write electrostatic latent images with a high density even when a spot diameter of beam spots for exposing a photoreceptor is not made optically small. SOLUTION: An optical write device 5 for forming electrostatic latent images by applying light from a laser diode in accordance with image data to the photoreceptor 2 is adapted to expose so that an exposure energy when the photoreceptor 2 is exposed becomes smaller than an exposure energy obtained from light attenuation characteristics of the photoreceptor 2. Electrostatic latent images can be optically written with the high density by increasing an output of the laser diode as much as possible in the range of the exposure energy and shortening an illumination time of the laser diode per dot as much as possible even if the spot diameter of beam spots for exposing the photoreceptor 2 is not made optically small.
