PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an especially economical new method for producing a particulate water-soluble cellulosic derivative. SOLUTION: This method for producing the particulate water-soluble cellulosic derivative comprises bringing a feed composition containing a swellable and/or a dissolvable cellulosic derivative and water into contact with a carrier gas and a heat exchange gas in a sievefree high-rotational speed gas jet impact mill, thereby converting the cellulosic derivative in the feed composition into a solid state form of finely particulate particles, then separating the resultant particulate cellulosic derivative from the heat exchange gas and carrier gas and, as necessary, drying the separated particulate cellulosic derivative. A specific moisture content is established for the swellable and/or dissolvable cellulosic derivative.
