PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rust preventive which is capable of well bundling iron and steel wire coils and has an excellent rust preventive effect during the time after manufacture before shipping. SOLUTION: This rust preventive consists of one or >=2 kinds of fatty acid ester R1-COO-R2 of fatty acid R1-COOH having R1 consisting of alkyl groups, alkenyl groups or alkinyl groups and a cyclic organic compound R2-OH having a functional group R2 of a cyclic structure having isolated electron pairs, double bonds or triple bonds as essential components. The cyclic organic compound is particularly preferably sorbitan. The rust preventive preferably contains the alkaline metal salt of the fatty acid as the essential component in addition to this ester. Solid powder of the inorganic compound of >=200 in Hv may be incorporated as a thickening agent into the rust preventive.
