PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a general purpose image processor in which high speed processing is realized while reducing memory capacity without requiring any extra device. SOLUTION: A PDL interpreting section interprets PDL data to generate intermediate format data for each band and a developing section 2 develops an image for each band. The developed image is compressed at a compressing section 3 and stored in a spool memory area 5. When the compressed image is a specified image, it is also stored in a cache memory area 6. When the developing section 2 develops a specified image having the same attributes subsequently, reference information of the compressed image in the cache memory area 6 is stored in the spool memory area 5 and developing and compression are not performed. After compressing a page of image, the compressed image in the spool memory area 5 or the compressed image in the cache memory area 6 referred by the reference information is decompressed at a decompressing section 7.
