PURPOSE: A device and a method for radio communication capable of selecting call quality are provided to speak over a telephone with the best quality by understanding the mode and the performance of user call device. CONSTITUTION: A user presses the button using a keypad to select a codec mode. It is determined whether the mode is a normal mode. If not, it is determined whether the mode is the high quality of sound mode. If the high quality mode is selected, a codec having a transfer rate corresponding to the high quality mode is selected. The codec mode selected in the user part of a portable phone is transmitted, and the answer that it can be processed in the other part of portable phone is received. If the corresponding codec mode is processed, the user transceives a voice using the selected mode. If not, or there is not any answer, said corresponding mode is translated into a normal mode.
