PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain position detecting errors from occurring. SOLUTION: A line sensor 12b is disposed with its left end aligned with an M-th element as counted from the left end of a line sensor 12a, and a line sensor 12c is disposed with its left end aligned with the position of an N-th element as counted from the left end of the line sensor 12a. To prevent reading of position detection signals of light receiving elements up to the i-th element as counted from the ends of the joints of the line sensors 12a to 12c where position detecting errors are likely to occur, the line sensor 12a scans the light receiving elements up to the (M+i)-th element as counted from its left end, the line sensor 12b scans the light receiving elements from the (M+i+1)-th element up to the (N+i)-th element as counted from the left end of the line sensor 12a, and the line sensor 12c scans the light receiving elements from the (N+i+1) -th element as counted from the left end of the line-sensor 12a, up to the element at the right end of the line sensor 12a.
