Communicating modules effect bi-directional transmission using infrared signals so as not to cause undue interference with other communicating modules. A module transmits at a low level and if a second module does not respond to the transmitted signal within a predetermined time of the first transmission, the module retransmits the signal at a greater intensity. The cycle is repeated until an adequate communication is established between the modules with the transmissions being at the lowest acceptable intensity level. The technique is particularly directed to communication between portable game station modules to prevent interference between communications of several modules and to conserve battery power of the modules.
