A roofing shingle adapted to interlock with similar adjacent shingles overtop of a roofing structure comprising (a) a planar panel having an upper region and a lower region divided by what will be in use an overlap line wherein the length of the lower region in the region in the direction perpendicular to the overline is longer than the length of the upper region also measured in the direction perpendicular to the overlap line; (b) lower flanges attached to the sides of the lower region and adapted to be in use downward and inward facing; and (c) upper flaps attached to the sides of the upper region and adapted to be in use upward and inward facing.
