PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus for digital image data which enables a user to select a method for decreasing the data quantity as desired by the user and also can be easily handled by the user. SOLUTION: This recording apparatus includes a data quantity decreasing means which can selectively change the compressibility of image data and at least a display size of image data or an image file form in order to decrease the quantity of image data and a recording means on which the image data is recorded with optical compressibility, in an optional image size or in an optical image file form. The data quantity decreasing means changes the compressibility, image size or image file form of the image data which are selected by a user among those recorded in the recording means and then read into a work area according to the data quantity decreasing method that is selected by the user. Then the image data undergone the changing process are recorded again in the recording means.
