PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a facing material and a base material of the facing material capable of obtaining an excellent design to exhibit new decoration in constructing facing material such as a floor, a wall or the like in a room. SOLUTION: In this quadrilateral base material 3 constructed by each pair of two sides 1a, 1b and 2a, 2b formed by two opposite sides, among two pairs of sides, at last one pair of two sides 1a, 1b are formed as curves parallel to each other, and in the base material 3, two curve-like sides 1a, 1b are formed longer than the other pair of two sides. The curve-like sides of the base material 3 are butted against each other to form a surface material A of a plate material of a designated shape.
