A locking device (6) having a plurality of depressible buttons (14) and which can be unlocked by depressing each of a predetermined group of those buttons (14). Tumblers (15) located within the body (7) of the device (6) are arranged so that each is associated with a respective one of the buttons (14), and each tumbler (15) responds to depression of its respective button (14) by moving into, or out of, a lock position. When the locking device (6) is in the locked condition, part of at least one tumbler (15) is located within a recess (25) of a locking slide (21), thereby preventing movement of the slide (21) and opening of the locking device (6). When the locking device (6) is in the unlocked condition, no part of the tumbler (15) intrudes into the recesses (25). Each tumbler (15) has, at one side edge, a locking part (34) and a release recess (35). A stop shoulder (36) is provided at the opposite side edge of the tumbler (15). The stop shoulder is engageable with a detent (29A) of spring (29). When the active tumbler (15A) is in the lock release position, the recess (35) of that tumbler (15A) is positioned so that longitudinal movement of slide (21) is not impeded. Conversely, when the tumbler (15A) is in the lock position the locking part (34) is located in one of the slide recesses (25) preventing longitudinal movement of the slide (21)
