PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic device which avoids undesirable free radical reaction caused by coloring seeds and which has high fastness, high color intensity and easily adaptable tint. SOLUTION: The electrochromic device is produced by disposing two plates or films such as glass plates 1, 2 each having a conductive layer on one face with the conductive layers facing each other, bonding the two plates or films with an annular sealing ring 3 to define a certain volume, and filling the volume with an electrochromic medium containing at least one kind of compound OX2 which can be reduced and at least one kind of compound RED1 which can be oxidized. Two of same or different coloring units included in the compound RED1 or OX2 are connected through at least one kind of bridge in such a manner that aσ-bond is produced or broken between the two units on oxidation or reduction while the colors of the compounds are changed.
