PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability for a user by automatically selecting the usable and most inexpensive bearer among the various bearers based on the contents of a generated mail and transmitting the mail when a character mail is transmitted. SOLUTION: A portable information terminal is constituted by comprising a bearer selecting means 142 in a central processing part 14, by which the bearers capable of transmitting the generated character mail are extracted from a bearer information management area 17 so as to generate a list by referring to the area 17 for managing a plurality of bearers and information concerning them and the most inexpensive bearer is automatically selected from the list.
