PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of controlling an automatic transmission for vehicles capable of effectively reducing shifting shocks which occur when a shift lever is operated slowly from a neutral range to a drive range. SOLUTION: A supply oil passage for an engagement element is changed by means of a manual valve operating in conjunction with the shift lever, and a solenoid hydraulic control valve for regulating hydraulic pressure supplied to the engagement element is provided in a portion of the supply oil passage. Movement of the shift lever from the neutral range to the drive range is detected by means of an NS switch and the non-contact time of the NS switch between a neutral-range position and a drive-range position is measured. As the NS switch is moved to the drive-range position, a temporarily high hydraulic pressure is supplied to the engagement element by the solenoid hydraulic control valve to eliminate a backlash. As the non-contact time gets longer, the amount of the backlash eliminated is made smaller to reduce shifting shocks.
