PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate dust from entering into an engine inside through pin insertion holes left open after detaching a set pin in an automatic tensioner forcedly pushing a push rod energized in a projecting direction by a tension adjustment spring, inserting the set pin from a cylinder outside, and setting a device in an initial state. SOLUTION: An elastic ring 23 is installed in a position closing the insertion holes 21 and 21 of the set pin 24 installed in the outer circumferential face of the cylinder 1, the set pin 24 is inserted by partially deforming the elastic ring 23 in setting, and the elastic ring 23 is made to return to its normal state after drawing out the set pin 24 by its elastic force so that the insertion holes 21 are tightly closed by the elastic ring 23.
