PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ATM unit and a cell continuity test method mounting an SAR function that can attain a cell continuity test so as to extend and application route range of the cell continuity test and to increase the transmission band of cells for continuity test without employing an exclusive test unit to send/receive the continuity test cells. SOLUTION: This invention uses a cell segment and reassemble function (SAR) function section 1-1 such as an inter-station or intra-station signal processing controller for ATM exchanges, a cell multiplexer demultiplexer and a remote station signal terminator or the like to utilize a cell production/ transmission/reception check function and to generate and transmit the continuity test cells, allows the SAR function section 1-1 to check the reception of the looped back continuity test cell at loopback points 1-31, 32, 33 of a test object continuity path so as to use the SAR function section and the test unit in common. The SAR function can utilize an optional SAR function mount unit. Moreover, a plurality of the SAR function sections in interlocked to increase the transmission band of the continuity test cells.
