PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance pickling efficiency without increasing the number of pickling tanks and increasing the concentration of an acid solution. SOLUTION: A steel strip 10 is returned at least once in the acid solution 40 by using intermediate dipping rolls 33, 33A and 33B and the opposite spacing (x) of the steel strip 10 before and behind the return where the steel strip travels in directions opposite to each other is so regulated as to attain >=30 to <=150 mm.
