PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the response speed of a multi-domain type liquid crystal display device without impairing its display quality. SOLUTION: When a liquid crystal 3 is interposed between two substrates 1 and 2 opposed to each other and structures 4 and 5 are provided on the surfaces opposed to each other of the substrates 1 and 2 to distort the alignment of liquid crystal molecules 6 in the direction of the thickness of the substrates 1 and 2, the liquid crystal molecules 6 are specified to be symmetrically aligned with respect to the central surface between the two substrates 1 and 2.
