The present invention provides systems and methods for handling user-provided information on a network. In one aspect content providers list the URLs or other identification information for files under their control. By listing such information, the content providers give permission to one or more service operator to extract tagged information from the listed files. In a second aspect a service operator enters into contracts with at least some of its content providers, which contracts obligate the service operator not to display specified information. In a third another aspect a service operator prevents content providers from using all of the displayed parameters in loading new item description, thereby placing evolutionary pressure on the development of the parameters. In yet a fourth aspect the service operator tracks the relative frequencies with which various parameters in the sets of parameters are employed by the individuals in loading the new item descriptions.
