<p>Optical switches and modulators contain a single-mode waveguide (401) and at least one closed-loop resonator (402). The single-mode waveguide (401) is optically coupled to the closed-loop resonator (402), and the light propagating in the single-mode waveguide (401) is modulated by applying an inducing effect, e.g. optically pumping, to the closed-loop resonator (402) so as to vary the effective propagation loss in the closed-loop resonator. Alternatively, the optical signal propagating in the single-mode waveguide (401) is modulated by applying an inducing effect, e.g. electro-optics, to vary the coupling between the single-mode waveguide and the closed loop resonator (402).</p> |
