PURPOSE: Provided are a method for modifying the surface of an article, by which a uniform and persistent modification treatment can affectively be applied to the prescribed surface portion of the article, to provide a surface-treating liquid used for the method, and the article having a modified surface treated by the method. CONSTITUTION: The method for modifying the surface of an article, is characterized by orienting the second portion of a polymer toward the modifying surface on the modifying surface constituting at least one portion of the surface of the prescribed article and further orienting the first portion of the polymer toward a side different from the modifying surface. The polymer has the first portion having functional groups and the second portion which has groups having an interfacial energy that is different from the interfacial energy of the functional groups and is the nearly same as the surface energy of the modifying surface, and is different from the material for constituting the modifying surface.
