The labelling machine (25) simultaneously applies labels to the necks (26) of two bottles in a carton (2) on a conveyor (1). A control (3) halts the conveyor when a box is beneath a label transporter (9, 10) which can move up and down. The labels (4) are applied vertically to the necks in positions such that they can be read manually or by machine from the end or side of the carton.
