<p>Optical communication system apparatus and methods of operating an optical communications system (1100, 1200) having a plurality of communication nodes (1331, 1333) is described. The system advantageously may utilize existing optical fiber networks (1101) and provide significantly increased channel capacity. In accordance with one aspect of the invention the system apparatus a common laser reference source is provided (1360).
