The method involves using at least one of two scanner device deflection systems that is suitable for deflecting part of a laser beam to a reference object at a defined distance from a transmit and receive diode. A distance value determined by passing the beam across the reference object is used as a reference value for calibrating the distance measurement system. At least one deflection device is used for black or white image balancing.
