PURPOSE: A river purification apparatus by riverbed filtration and a method thereof are provided to improve water purification efficiency, increase facility life and facilitate maintenance by using sand as filtering material and easily discharging sludge. CONSTITUTION: A filtering material-filled structure(11) is prepared at a riverbed. An assembly water gate cutoff(18) opens or shuts water gate. The filtering material-filled structure(11) comprises a large-diameter gravel layer(25a), a medium-diameter gravel layer(25b), small-diameter gravel layer(25), a sand layer(21) and a grating cover(22), from the bottom to upside.
