Alcohols are prepared by reacting an aluminium trialkyl, in which each alkyl group contains 2-24 carbon atoms, with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in a first stage at 15-30 DEG F. for a time sufficient to convert at least 80 mol per cent of the alkyl groups to alkoxide groups, and then in a second stage at 90-130 DEG F. for a time sufficient to substantially complete oxidation, and hydrolysing the oxidation product to form the alcohol. It is preferred to operate in the presence of an inert solvent which is stripped from the oxidation product before hydrolysis. In a continuous process part of the product from the first stage may be recycled in admixture with fresh aluminium trialkyl. It is preferred to use a pre-dried oxygen-containing gas and limit the second oxidation step to a reaction time of 1-30 minutes. Examples describe the oxidation of mixed aluminium trialkyls.
