Process for spot welding workpieces comprises moving the welding electrode using an electromotor so that the pressing pressure of the electrode against the workpiece is measured and the drive of the motor regulated so the pressure accepts a prescribed theoretical value and then the welding can be carried out. An independent claim is also included for a spot welding device comprising: (i) an electromotor (22) for driving the welding electrode (56); (ii) a pressure measuring device (46) for measuring the pressure of the electrode against the workpiece; (iii) a pressure storage unit in which a theoretical value for the pressure of the electrode is stored; and (iv) a regulating device to regulate the drive of the motor.
