A modified polyphenylene ether characterized by being obtained by reacting, in the presence of a free-radical generator, a phenolic compound with a modified polyphenylene ether precursor which comprises polyphenylene ether chains each having a terminal phenolic hydroxyl group and in which at least one, but not all, of the terminal phenolic hydroxyl groups has been modified and further characterized by having a number-average molecular weight of 4,000 or higher; and a process for producing the modified polyphenylene ether.
