An analog to digital converter includes a delta sigma modulator (103) that produces a stream of pulses (104) whose density represents the amplitude of an analog input signal (Vin). A decimation filter (105) is coupled to filter the stream of pulses to produce a digital word (106) representative of the analog input signal. A serial interface (109) is coupled to receive and shift serially the bits of the output words to a terminal (110). A timing generator (17) generates timing signals to control the modulator and the filter and to generate a conversion done signal (21). A control circuit (107) produces data ready signal (32) on the conversion done signal and causes the serial interface circuit to serially shift the bits in response to a digital control signal (SCLK).
