PURPOSE: To provide a magneto-resistive film wherein tae increase of an inter layer coupling field due to the reduction of the thickness of an intermediate layer is suppressed. CONSTITUTION: The magneto-resistive film which is a multi-layered film including a pinned layer 3 having the magnetization whose direction is fixed, the non-magnetic intermediate layer 4 formed on the pinned layer and a free layer 5 formed on the intermediate layer and having the magnetization whose direction is changed in accordance with an external magnetic field and shows the size of resistance corresponding to the angle formed by the magnetization directions of the pinned layer and the free layer is characterized in that a copper oxide layer 7 consisting of an oxide including the element copper is formed directly on the free layer or through an oxide layer 6 formed between the free layer and the copper oxide layer and consisting of a material formed by the oxidation of a material constituting the free layer.
