Nitrohydrocarbons are prepared by reacting 60-100% by wt nitric acid with a molar excess C1- 10 hydrocarbon which is an alkane, cycloalkane or benzene in the vapour phase under superatmospheric pressure at 300-700 DEG C. for a time sufficient to ntrate the hydrocarbon and no longer than 50 milliseconds and immediately quenching the reaction products, to freeze the equilibrium of the reaction, by rapid expansion. The preferred hydrocarbon is methane. The reaction products are preferably expanded to approximately atmospheric pressure into a water-cooled chamber. The reaction is conveniently effected in a rocket engine. Examples relate to the nitration of methane, decane, cyclohexane, pentane and benzene. The process is illustrated by reference to drawings (not shown).
