A device for engaging an elongate article P (such as a pipe or cable), for displacing the article longitudinally, comprises a tubular body formed of a plurality of longitudinal parts 11, 12 arranged to be opened apart and then closed together around the article P, and at least one collar 20 formed of a plurality of parts carried by respective parts of the tubular body. The collar 20 has a radially inner surface to form an interference engagement with the outer surface of the article P, and a radially outer surface to engage the inner surface of the tubular body. The outer surface of the collar and/or the inner surface of the tubular body is tapered towards the trailing end of the device. A simpler version of the device dispenses with the collar 20 and has the inner surface of the tubular body formed to grip the article directly. (Figure 5, not shown). The device may be hand operated or incorporated in a powered apparatus. |
