PURPOSE: To provide a propelling pencil which uses a lead effectively and can be easily put to practical use. CONSTITUTION: A tip pipe 12 for protecting the lead L is axially mounted, in a freely jutting-out/retracting manner, from a tip opening in the tip part 10a of the propelling pencil 10. The tip pipe 12 is made of a metal and has two cuts 12a, 12a formed extending axially from the tip and mutually almost in parallel. In addition, the two cuts 12a, 12a are spaced at an interval of 180deg. or below in the peripheral direction and almost in parallel with each other in the axial direction. A space between the two cuts 12a, 12a is filled with an elastic piece 12b. The elastic piece 12b of the tip pipe 12 tends to fall down inwardly and comes into surface contact with the lead L, so that the retaining force of the lead L is increased.
