PURPOSE: A telephone response stand-by apparatus and method is provided to shorten the time of stand-by status by diversifying an information signal to request a calling subscriber to wait for a called subscriber's response and providing fractionated information signals to the caller according to circumstances. CONSTITUTION: When a call is received to a called subscriber's wireless terminal(300) from a calling subscriber but the called subscriber is placed in a difficult situation to receive the call, the called subscriber pushes an AR(Auto Response) button. The wireless terminal(300) searches for various response messages stored in a lookup table(160) connected to a switching part(130) to confirm whether the auto response message allocated to the incoming call. If there is no specially allocated message in the lookup table(160), the wireless terminal(300) regenerates a common message. In case that the lookup table(160) is storing the specially allocated message, the wireless terminal(300) regenerates the message of the associated voice message address so that the calling subscriber can listen to it. At this moment, the LED of the AR button is switched on and off to indicate that the calling subscriber is in stand-by status while the calling subscriber listens to the regenerated message.
