A battery pack has a plurality of rechargeable battery cells 2a, 2b and switches 14a, 14b, 14c for selectively connecting the cells in series or parallel. Recharge terminals 15, 16 are respectively connected with the positive pole of the first cell and the negative pole of the second cell. The battery pack is particularly for use in portable electronic devices such as mobile phones and other portable data communication devices, where the batteries are connected in series when the device is in a communication mode and in parallel when the device is in a standby mode. A further switch 14f may be provided to prevent a voltage being applied to the transmitter section 5a when the device is in a standby mode. During switching between the series and parallel states, all three switches may be temporarily simultaneously open to avoid short circuiting of the cells, and a large capacitor 11 may be provided to supply the device during such periods. |
