The present invention provides pharmaceutically active compounds formula I or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or solvate thereof having activity as selective estrogen receptor modulators, pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds, and methods of using formula I compounds for treating conditions resulting from estrogen deprivation or the inappropriately high presence of estrogen. Also provided are methods and chemical intermediates for the production of compounds of formula I above.
