Boxes (2) containing banknotes are secured by a mechanism utilizing a latch plate (46) that can be removed and replaced automatically by a device (1) of which the parts include a top slide (8) equipped with a pivoting arm (12) and a pusher (17) designed to hold the latch plate (46) steady and in tension from two points of contact; the device (1) is also equipped with a bottom slide (9) carrying a gripper (28) of which the two jaws (32, 33) operate in concert one with another and with the pusher (17) and the arm (12) to release the latch plate (46) from the position in which it secures the box (2).
