A molded base module (10, 110) for a filter assembly includes a header portion (20, 120) that defines a receiving cavity for a replaceable cartridge (12, 112) and may include integral inlet and outlet structures (34, 36, 44, 46) for communicating with the received filtered cartridge (12, 112). The header portion (20, 120) includes an integrally formed retainer (50, 150) having a retaining channel (54, 154) for receiving tabs (70, 170) projecting from the cartridge (12, 112), thereby retaining the cartridge to the module (10, 110). The retaining channel (54, 154) is defined by a retaining lip (52, 52'/86, 156) and axially spaced shoulder (58, 158) connected by a side wall (56, 159). In an illustrated embodiment (110), the retaining lip (156) includes a plurality of angularly spaced axial slots (165) and the side wall (159) includes ramplike projections (167) which mate with correspondingly shaped tabs (170) projecting from the cartridge (112). <IMAGE>
