Substitution derivatives of 1,3,3-trimethylindoline-2-spiro-21-pyrano-pyridines are used in photochromic glazing as a film dispersed in a polymer on a sheet of glass, or in solution in a low polarity solvent between two sheets of glass. The substances absorb in the 5900-6200 </>rA range upon U.V. irradiation. Substituents used are halogens (specifically chlorine), the radicals OCH3, NO2, OH, CN, CF3, alkyl or aromatic.ALSO:Photochromic substitution derivatives of 1,3,3 - trimethyl - indoline - 2 - spiro - 21-pyrono-pyridines are prepared by the action of the appropriate derivatives of 1,3,3-trimetyl-2-methylene-indoline on a substituted hydroxyformyl pyridine in an alcohol medium, in the presence of a little piperidine. Substituents used are halogens (specifically chlorine), the radicals -OCH3, -NO2, -OH, -CN, -CF3, alkyl or aromatic.
