PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect failure such as the wear of a cam by comparing the load of a cam driving motor with limit loads set per operation of a tool exchange arm in a cam type tool exchanger. SOLUTION: This cam type tool exchanger is provided with the tool exchange arm performing turn movement and reciprocating linear travel to exchange tools between a main spindle and a tool exchange position, a cam shaft to which a first cam converting rotation movement to turn movement at a plurality of steps and a second cam converting rotation movement to reciprocating movement are attached, the cam driving motor rotating and driving the cam shaft, and a movement transmission mechanism transmitting movements of a first driven piece driven by the first cam and a second driven piece driven by the second cam to the tool exchange arm to make the tool exchange arm perform turn movement and reciprocating linear travel. When a load of the cam driving motor exceeds the limit load, an alarm signal is outputted or the cam driving motor is stopped.
