PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wire electric discharge machine allowing a device to be miniaturized and lightened. SOLUTION: A common terminal A is connected to a workpiece 2 through a cable W. The minus side of a power supply 30 is connected to the common terminal A, and the plus side is connected to a wire 1 through a switching element 31 and a diode 16. A series circuit formed by interconnecting a diode 6, a current limiting resister 5, and a switching element 32 in series is connected to a series circuit of the switching element 31 and the diode 16 while setting a cathode of the diode 6 is made on the wire 1 side. When breakdown voltage with opposite polarity is applied to the clearance between the wire 1 and the workpiece 2, the switching element 32 is turned on and the switching element 31 is turned off. In other cases, the switching element 31 is turned on and the switching element 32 is turned off, so that energy accumulated in stray inductance 7 in the cable W is absorbed in the power supply 30.
