PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for the preparation of a rubber composition which process is capable of preparing efficiently a rubber composition that contains a silica and is excellent in wear resistance, molding stability. SOLUTION: The process for the preparation of a rubber composition is characterized by adding, to a mixture containing a silica and a rubber component, a metal salt of a 10-20C fatty acid of 0.2-6 pts.wt. relative to 100 pts.wt. of the above rubber component, kneading at 120-160 deg.C, then adding and kneading a vulcanizing agent at 100 deg.C or lower. Preferred embodiments are as follows: a metal in the metal salt of the above fatty acid is of at least one kind selected from potassium and zinc; the above silica is added in an amount of 20-130 pts.wt. relative to 100 pts. wt. of the rubber component; and a carbon back is added in an amount of 5-60 pts. wt. relative to 100 pts.wt. of the rubber component.
