<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical method for producing 3-hydroxypropionitrile in high yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing 3-hydroxypropionitrile comprises (a) reacting acrylonitrile with water in a prescribed molar ratio in the presence of a weak base within a prescribed temperature range under a prescribed pressure until about 40-80% conversion rate is attained, (b) cooling the resultant mixture and then separating the aqueous phase thereof, (c) removing the acrylonitrile from the residual organic phase, (d) subjecting the obtained mixture to thermal decomposition in the presence of a basic catalyst selected from the group consisting of an oxide of calcium, magnesium or the like, a salt of an alkali metal with acetic acid, carbonic acid or the like within a prescribed temperature range under a prescribed pressure and (e) isolating the desired 3-hydroxypropionitrile from the resultant mixture by fractional distillation.</p> |
