PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate unevenness in the outer diameter of an optical fiber preform to equalize the outer diameter when unevenness occurs in the outer diameter. SOLUTION: An apparatus for processing an optical preform is equipped with an outer diameter-measuring instrument 4 which measures the outer diameter of the optical fiber diameter 10 while traveling in the longitudinal direction of the preform 10 and also with a transfer mechanism 3 installed on at least one of holding parts 1 and 2 for attempting to equalize the outer diameter while pulling the preform 10 on the basis of data found by the instrument 4.
