PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an image forming apparatus and a method for adjusting a light quantity capable of calibrating a sensor and adequately detecting every time the light quantity. SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus comprises a light emitting element array 50 consisting of light emitting elements in an array type for emitting a line like optical beam to an image carrier body 1, a light quantity detecting means 60 for detecting a light quantity of each light emitting element in the light emitting element array, a light quantity adjusting means 10 for adjusting the light quantity of each light emitting element based on the result detected by the light quantity detecting means 60 and a calibration light emitting element 50a used for calibrating the light quantity detecting means 60. Before the light quantity of each light emitting element 50b is detected by the light quantity detecting means 60, the calibration light emitting element 50a is activated and then the calibration of the light quantity detecting means 60 is executed.
