Steel slags and iron sources are processed to recover pig iron and innocuous slags by providing a molten slag to iron bath volume ratio of greater than 0.5:1, adjusting the slag basicity (CaO/SiO2) to 1.0-1.8, top blowing with hot blast, and bottom blowing coal through the iron bath. Processing of steel slags and iron sources to recover pig iron and innocuous slags is carried out by: (a) providing a volume ratio of molten slag to iron bath of greater than 0.5:1, preferably 0.8-1.5:1; (b) adding SiO2 sources, e.g. foundry sand, slag sand and/or fine ore to the slag to adjust its basicity (CaO/SiO2) to 1.0-1.8, preferably 1.2-1.8, at an Al2O3 content of 10-25 wt.%; (c) top blowing with hot blast; and (d) blowing coal optionally with inert gas (especially nitrogen) and optionally oxygen or hot air, through the bath.
|
