A method and apparatus for transferring an electrophoresis gel (60) from a cassette (54) to a carrier (62) includes a tray (28) having a dimension to receive a cassette (54) and a carrier device (62). The tray (28) has a bottom wall (30) with a surface with channels or recesses formed by projections (46) to reduce contact of an electrophoresis gel (60) with the bottom wall (30) of the tray (28). The projections (46) are typically pyramid-shaped members extending to a peak having a small surface area to prevent the electrophoresis gel (60) from adhering to the bottom wall (30). The bottom wall (30) also includes a recessed area (32) to receive the carrier (62) so that the gel (60) can slide easily from the cassette (54) to open jaws (64, 66) of the carrier (62). A retaining arm (14) extends from a side wall of the tray (28) to hold the jaws (64, 66) of the carrier (62) in an open position while the gel (60) is being positioned between the clamping surfaces of the jaws (64, 66).
