PURPOSE: An address detection apparatus and method, relating to an Ethernet protocol, is provided to detect a packet address input from an NIC(Network Interface Card) connected to an LAN(Local Area Network) specially by comparing a plurality of upper bits of an address so that it can speedily determine if packets are received. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises steps of receiving packets and storing 4 byte destination address by detecting an SFD(Start Frame Delimiter) of an MAC(Media Access Controller)(101), determining if the destination address is all stored at an FIFO memory in the MAC(102), outputting the destination address with a preliminary address loading signal to a preliminary address comparator(103), enabling the preliminary address comparator to compare the 4 byte destination address, stored in the first memory, with a 4 byte group address, stored in the second memory(104), determining if the destination address is identical to the group address(105), outputting a hit signal to the MAC in the case that the identification address is identical to the group address(106), rejecting the packet in the case that the identification address is not identical to the group address(106a), enabling the MAC, receiving a hit signal for notifying that the identification address is identical to the group address, to compare a remaining 2 byte of the destination address with a remaining 2 byte of the group address(107), determining if the remaining 2 byte addresses are identical(108), and receiving finally the transmitted packet in the case that the remaining 2 byte addresses are identical(108).
